Why Build Your Email List? – 4 Compelling Reasons
I get asked all the time “Why Build Your Email List” and my reply is always this.
If you’re not building an email list not only are you making a huge marketing mistake – you’re also leaving a lot of money on the table.
In todays post I’m going to share with you four compelling reasons why building your subscriber base (email list) is so important. As well as share with you some great email marketing tips and resources.
But before I get into the 4 compelling reasons why you need to start building your email list. Let me answer another question I get asked a lot.
Isn’t Email Marketing Dead?
Not by a long shot.
In fact email marketing is still one of the most effect methods of marketing being used by online marketers today. And with the surge of mobile it’s getting even stronger.
Everyone with a smartphone myself included log into their email account many times per day. Personally I probably check my email accounts 4 or 5 times per day.
And many people are signed into their accounts 24/7 with push notification enabled.
Think about it everyone wants your email address.
Almost every website asks for your email address. Every social media site wants your email address. Even online newspapers want your email address.
It really doesn’t matter who it is, everyone wants your email address.
And there’s a reason for that.
It’s Because Email Is So Effective
One of the reasons why email marketing is so effective is that it’s a very direct and personal way of getting in touch with people.
It’s a very personal environment.
Not to mention cost effective.
According to the Direct Marketing Association the return on investment is around 4300%. No wonder every savvy online marketer relies on email marketing as a primary source of revenue.
Plus having an email subscriber base is a very effective way of from moving from a conversation on your site to generating sales.
What Makes Email Marketing Work?
The best email marketing works when there is a true exchange for your valuable information and your subscribers valuable time.
Your subscribers need to know they can trust you. They need to know that you’re not some spammy constant sales pitch marketer.
Which you and I are all too familiar with and just does not work.
And to build that trust and show your subscribers you’re not a spammy marketer you need to take the time to build a relationship with your subscribers.
And once people know, like and most importantly trust you – they will buy from you.
And building a solid trusting relationship with your subscribers is not complicated.
Provide quality niche specific content your subscriber needs and that help’s them.
Do this and people will spread the word about you and your products or services.
I’ve have people that have been on my email list for years and years, and yes they buy from me over and over again. And it’s because they know they can trust me.
4 Compelling Reasons To Build Your List
1) Sell More Products
There is no shame in making money online as long as you’re doing it in an honest and ethical way.
And having an email list allows you to take your time and tell your story about the product or service you’re marketing. Whether it’s your own product or someone else’s.
And email marketing is very pure. The subscribers on your list that need the product or service you’re promoting will purchase it. The ones that don’t – won’t. No big deal.
2) Say Goodbye To Paid Advertising
Yes paid advertising does work. But it can cost a lot of money and there’s no guarantee you’ll make money. It’s very risky no matter how prepared you are.
Unfortunately I know plenty of people that have lost their hard earned money on paid advertising.
And if you’re going to use paid advertising it’s far better to use that money to build your list. You will gain a better return for your money.
Yeah I know you want to make money NOW. Who doesn’t? But if you think short term you’re going to have a short term business. You have to think long term.
By having your own subscriber base you can run an ad and if no one on your list buys, sure it hurts but it cost you nothing.
You can simply run another ad in a week or a month – no big deal.
Once your list reaches a certain size, and for me that was 11,000 people. You can earn a fulltime income serving your list.
And by serving them I don’t mean pitching them all the time on the latest product or service.
- Just flat out helping them
- Understanding what they need
- Continuously strengthening your relationship with them
3) Grow Your Influence
I want you to think of the top people I mean the leaders in your industry. Do they have a mailing list?
Damn right they do.
The most powerful way of increasing your influence is by building your list. Everyone on your list knows on average 50 people. This is their influence on you.
Each one of your subscribers can potential talk to 5o people about you – good or bad (let’s be realistic).
Every person that’s added to your list extends your reach plus the potential to extend your reach to the 50 people this new subscriber knows.
- Want to grow your reach? Build your list
- Want to grow your influence? Build your list
- Want to grow your audience? Build your list
- Want to increase your credibility? Build your list
- Want to create a full time income? Build your list
4) Sell Advertising Space
If you have a responsive list you have the opportunity to sell space or ads to people for a nice profit.
Now I’m not talking about you being one of those people that sell “guaranteed click” traffic in places like the warrior forum where they sell you a solo ad space and guarantee the clicks on your ad. Fastest way to lose money and just a plain rip off.
No I’m talking about your list where you have taken the time to build your relationship with them by providing quality content, products and resources based on the needs of your subscribers.
I mean a golden list.
And because this is your list and you need to protect them. So you’re not going to sell space to just anyone. You need to be picky and by doing so you’re respecting your subscribers and your subscriber will thank you for it.
And so will the advertiser. And because you’re so careful with whom you choose to advertise so you keep your list responsive you can ask for a premium advertising rate.
Email Marketing Tips
1) Don’t Treat Your Subscribers Like An ATM
Yes your list is there to generate revenue but don’t abuse this privilege. If you do you will burn out your list and it will become worthless.
2) Don’t Send Messages Just Because You Can
Peoples time is valuable so remember that. You don’t want to add to garbage information overload. So make sure everything you send to your subscribers has value and can truly help them.
3) These Are People
Remember there is a real person at the other end of that email address. And just like you and me they have goals and dreams so you make sure you respect that.
4) Never Stop Growing Your List
Building your list is a constant endeavour. It’s a numbers game.
People will be subscribing and unsubscribing. But if you’re providing your subscribers with quality information, resources and help you’ll find you’ll have very loyal subscribers.
How To Build Your List
1) The first tool you’re going to need is an Auto Responder. This tool will do all the heavy lifting for you.
You will be able to create your optin form. It will then capture all your subscribers contact info and then deliver the content you create to them on a schedule you set.
Now there are plenty of services available and I have tried many of them. But the one that I have been using for years now is Aweber.
It has everything I need and the support is fantastic. Support is very important to me.
Some of the other popular services are:
- Get Response
- Constant Contact
Overall all autoresponder services do the same thing it’s the additional services or features that will be different.
So whether you choose to use Aweber or another autoresponder service make sure it provides you with all the tools and support you need and at a price that’s right for you.
2) Next you need a compelling free offer to entice visitors to subscribe to your list.
The two components of your offer are:
- It has to be free.
- And it has to be something that people can’t get anywhere else.
Your free offer can be anything. It can be a course, an ebook, free consultation, free software – anything of real value.
My free offer is a 5 day video course on how to turn your hobby or passion into a thriving online business. No one else has this offer and it is of very high value to my subscriber.
3) Have your optin form in high value areas on your site.
You need to provide multiple places for your visitors to subscribe to your list. The best piece of real estate on your site is anywhere above the fold of your site.
Above the fold is everything that appears on a persons computer screen without having to scroll to see things.
As you can see with my site my optin form is at the top of the sidebar above the fold so everyone can see it. I also mention it in my header to draw attention to my optin form.
The next place to have your optin form is at the end of your posts and pages. Once you finish this post you will see another optin form giving people the opportunity to become a subscriber.
Now there are a few other methods you can use such as popups or as some people call them a lightbox popup. This is where a optin form will appear taking over the whole screen area after a certain period of time.
You can have a slider. This is where your optin form can slide onto the screen from different directions (top, bottom or from the side)
You can have a floating footer bar. This is where the bar sticks to the bottom of the screen window and will scroll with your visitor.
There are plenty of choices you can use. The point is whatever you choose make sure you’re always giving people the opportunity to become part of your subscriber base.
Right now I have my optin at the top of my site and at the end of all my content. But I’m contemplating of adding one more feature – I just have to test which one.
3 Great Resources
Below are some resources that you can use for your email marketing.
Aweber – As I mentioned this is the autoresponder service I use.
Magic Action Box – This is a free plugin and it’s the tool I use for placing your optin form at the end of your pages and posts.
Optin Monster – This premium plugin has several features for placing your optin form in different locations on your site.
