What Is A Lack Mindset? And How It’s Holding You Back

So, what is a lack mindset? Well, if all you’re doing is looking at things from the point of view of “I can’t have”, “I don’t have enough money”, I don’t have enough time”, or “this isn’t going to work so what’s the point” and that’s all you see. That’s a lack mindset. It’s also referred to as a Scarcity Mindset.

Tony Robbins one of the most profound life strategists said it best:

Whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in your life

Simply put – what you focus on is what you get. So if you’re constantly focused on I don’t have enough money, time, connections, attention, rest, health.

Then that’s exactly what you’re going to get. Lack of money, time, connections, attention, rest, and health.

Your success in life comes down to your mindset. 80% of your success is your mindset the other 20% is the actual mechanics of what you need to do in order to accomplish what you want to accomplish.

And it makes no difference what you want to do. If you’re not in the right mindset you won’t accomplish what you want to accomplish.

A Lack Mindset Is Why You Have What You Have In Your Life Right Now

There’s this book I highly recommend you read and it’s called People Are Idiots And I Can Prove It by Larry Winget. You can find it on Amazon.

I love Lary because he says it like it is. No fluff, no it’s not your fault crap. Just the cold hard truth.

And the truth is if you have a lack mindset then it’s your fault because you choose to have a lack mindset.

There’s a section in his book where he talks about hearing people constantly saying:

  • I want more money
  • I want a better relationship
  • I want to be healthy
  • I want a successful business
  • I want to retire
  • I want
  • I want
  • I want

But it’s all a lie. People don’t want this stuff. Those are just words. You want what you have and that’s why you have it.

If you wanted any of those things you would have them. You would have something different or at a minimum, you would be taking action to have something different from what you have.

Your life is the way it is because that’s the way you want it. Your actions have created your life as it is. And these actions have produced your results.

A Lack Mindset Keeps You From Achieving Your Goals

With a lack mindset, everything keeps getting smaller. With an abundant mindset, everything gets exponentially bigger.

With a lack mindset people (you) typically feel overwhelmed, scared, depressed, and even paralyzed. And that there is not enough.

However with an abundant mindset people (you) feel excited, motivated, and ready to take action to get what they want. And there is unlimited opportunity for growth and endless possibilities.

And you have the power to decide which mindset to have.

So How Can You Shift from a Scarcity Mindset to an Abundant Mindset?

I had a lack mindset and then one day something changed in me and I made the decision I no longer wanted the life I had.

Unknowingly just making the decision to change sent me on the path to change.

But how?

All I knew was what I knew at that moment. So I started looking for mentors that could teach me how to change my life to the one I wanted as opposed to the one I had.

The first mentor I discovered was Tony Robbins. I’m sure you’ve heard of him. He was the guy that got me to understand the power of my own mind. And that I was in control of my life.

So the information I am going to share with you is from what I learned from Tony. In the 90s Tony had an infomercial on T.V. and he was selling his course called Personal Power.

And yes I bought it. And yep, I still have it and it’s on cassettes – lol.

Changing your mindset and creating long-term change all starts with shifting your beliefs.

So you need to look at your current beliefs. It’s your beliefs that has shaped your life. Now most of us think it’s the events in our lives that shape our beliefs. And nothing could be further from the truth.

It’s not the events in our lives that shape our beliefs. It’s the meaning we attach to those events that do.

Now, most people don’t consciously decide what they are going to believe. As I said a belief is determined by what we associate with an event and more often than not it is a misrepresentation of that event.

And once a belief is set we start to treat them as realities like they are gospel. A belief is a feeling of certainty. And we rarely question our long-held beliefs.

So if you want to create long-term change you must change the beliefs that are holding you back.

The first belief that needs to change is you need to believe that you can create change quickly and that you can change now.

Remember I said I unknowingly made a change? And this was by me making the decision to change. We can change anything at any time. All you have to do is decide.

The second belief you must have is that you are responsible for your own change. Without taking responsibility for your own change you will NEVER create long-term change.

Now in order to make any changes:

  • You must believe something must change
  • You must believe you must change
  • And you have to believe you can change

So How Do You Change A Belief?

The most effective way to change a belief is to associate enough pain to your current belief. And I mean down in your gut PAIN that it is causing you now and what it’s going to cause in the future.

If you have to write things down do so. Seeing things written down will make things even more real for you. You need to feel this pain.

Then you MUST associate pleasure with the idea of adopting a new empowering belief. Again write things down.

We, humans, are simple creatures we do things to either avoid pain or our desire to gain pleasure.

So right now your current dis-empowering belief you have you’ve associated more pleasure to it than pain. And you need to turn that around.

Remember, if you question anything long enough you will start to doubt it. And this includes your beliefs. Even ones you’ve held true for years and years.

The next step to creating new empowering beliefs is to create Conviction. So how do you do that?

You start with your basic new belief and then you reinforce that belief with new and more powerful references.

So for example let’s say you want to stop smoking. To strengthen your resolve talk to people who have quit smoking. What reason prompted them to quit? Talk to your doctor.

The more references you developed, the stronger your convictions. Also, ask questions that cause strong emotions. What is smoking doing to your body? What will it cost you if you don’t quit?

The 2 Most Powerful Things That Changed My Lack Mindset

There is so much I have learned from mentors such as Larry Winget, Jack Canfield, Tony Robbins, and so on.

But I have to say from everything I have learned and keep putting into practice. The 2 most powerful things that changed me from a lack mindset to an abundant one was what I learned from Tony Robbins.

And they are:

  • Asking Better Questions
  • Removing Negative Self Talk

Asking Better Questions

It’s amazing something so simple can make such a dramatic change in one’s life.

And I’m talking about questions. But just not any old questions. I’m talking about asking yourself better questions.

Questions determine our thoughts. So if you ask yourself better questions you’ll get better answers.

Successful people ask better questions and as a result, they get better answers.

When you have a lack mindset you’re definitely asking poor questions, so you’re getting poor answers.

So garbage in, garbage out.

If you’re asking yourself why can’t I succeed? Your brain will tell you. Even if it has to make something up.

So the answer could be – Because you’re stupid or because you don’t deserve success.

In Tony’s book, he talks about his friend W. Mitchell who was in an accident where two-thirds of his body was burnt. He then was in an airplane accident and lost the use of his legs and was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

He could have easily felt sorry for himself, asking why me? Why is life so unfair?

But he didn’t he decides to focus on asking different questions. He asked how can I use this? Because of this what will I be able to contribute to others?

And because of those types of questions, he put his life on a different path. A path of making his life and the world a better place. Including marrying the woman of his dreams.

Instead of focusing on what he didn’t have he focused on what he had. He asked himself – What do I still have? What am I capable of now, even more so than before?

Questions determine everything in your life, your abilities, your relationships to your income.

So what are the questions you habitually ask yourself? Let’s take your finances.

What questions are you asking yourself?

Maybe you’re asking why can’t I make money online? A terrible question for sure. And because of that kind of question you’re getting terrible answers.

  • You can’t make money because you’re not smart enough
  • You’re not lucky like everyone else is
  • You don’t have the skills
  • Blah
  • Blah
  • Blah

Now how do you think things would start to change if you asked yourself a different question?

Maybe ask yourself this question. What can I do in order to achieve my online financial goals?

  • I can set specific financial goals and a timeline for each financial goal
  • I can research different legit online making money opportunities and focus on the one that best suits me
  • I can find someone who has achieved what I want to achieve online and do what they do
  • I can find likeminded people to support and mentor me

Remember if you ask empowering questions you’ll get empowering answers. So you need to develop a pattern of asking yourself questions that empower you.

Every day we all have challenges, some small others much bigger.

However no matter how big or small the challenge is ask yourself the right problem-solving questions.

So when a challenge comes along instead of asking questions that don’t empower you ask ones that do.

Below are the examples of empowering questions found in Tony Robbins book Awaken The Giant Within. And the ones I’ve been using for years along with ones of my own.

  • What is great about this problem?
  • What am I willing to do to make this right?
  • What is not right yet?
  • What am I willing to no longer do in order to make it the way I want?
  • How can I enjoy the process while I do what’s necessary to make it the way I want it?

Can see the difference between asking an empowering question and a non-empowering question?

Removing Negative Self Talk

What is negative self-talk? Negative self-talk is what we say to ourselves as a result of outside circumstances and events. Basically, we blame ourselves.

And the most used negative self-talk is one that is called Labeling.

For example, let’s say you entered a race and you came in second and you tell yourself you’re a loser. Or you got a poor grade after taking a test and you tell yourself you’re stupid.

You’ve gone ahead and exaggerated an experience and have convinced yourself this is a reflection of your self-worth.

Overcoming Negative Self Talk

I don’t think people truly understand the power words have in our lives. So you need to choose and use them wisely.

By simply changing the words (vocabulary) you habitually use you can instantly change how you feel, and in turn how you live.

Remember we talk about beliefs?

It’s your thoughts that shape your beliefs. And negative self-talk causes you to have negative beliefs about yourself and the world around you. And this holds you back from achieving your goals.

Remember – what you focus on is what you get. And if all you’re doing is focusing on the negative. You’re attracting more negativity into your life.

And it works the opposite too. If you decide to focus on the positive you attract more positivity into your life.

Now when I say that I want to be clear. Just sitting around your house chanting positive affirmations is not the path to long-lasting change. In order to form long-lasting change you must take action.

So in order to take control and overcome your negative self talk notice the words you habitual use and change them to empowering words.

For example, I Hate could change to I Prefer. Failure could change to Learning. Frustrated could change to Challenged. And so on.

So write down the non-empowering words you habitual use and replace them with empowering words.

And be sure to make the commitment to use these empowering words and you’ll start to see how things start to change.

Wrapping Up

The one thing that’s going to put you on the path to achieving any goal you want is your mindset.

Without the proper mindset, you’re already starting from behind, and success while not impossible, you’re certainly not giving yourself the best opportunity to succeed with the wrong mindset.

You see no matter what your goals are you’re going to have challenges while reaching these goals. And if you don’t have the right mindset any challenge could most likely derail you from achieving your goals.

But with the right mindset and the tools to approach challenges head-on, success may get temporarily slowed down but you won’t get derailed from achieving your goals.
