Stop Focusing On Stuff That Doesn’t Matter
So here’s my little rant for the day. Well maybe not a rant more along the lines of tough love.
Spending your time working on your websites design colors to make it look just so, or you’re spending time finding the graphic artist that can make that perfect logo for you. Or you keep changing wordpress themes over and over again.
Hey guess what? When it comes to making money online none of that stuff matters.
Plus The Visitors To Your Site Don’t Care!!
I’ve seen so many people, hell I still see people stuck on all this crap, spending hour after hour, day after day week after week on this stuff getting things ready and they never get started on actually building their business.
No one gives shit if you’re using this wordpress theme over that wordpress theme; no one cares about your logo, no one cares what your contact forum looks like.
All people care about is that you’re providing them with the solution they’re looking for.
This Is What You Should Be Focused On
Look when I first started online way back in 2000 I did the same thing. I wanted my site to look just so. I wasted more time on crap that didn’t matter it was crazy. But as soon as I stopped worrying about that stuff my business took off.
So don’t worry you’re not alone – but from today on things are going to be different.
Now before I get into the things you really need to be focused on let me say this so there’s NO confusion. There is no magic bullet or secret system to building your online business. There are systems yes, but no hidden secrets.
Without traffic you have no buisness – end of story. And there are only two types of traffic.
Paid traffic will get people to your site faster for a price. But it’s money many people either don’t want to risk or they can’t risk because of the learning curve to understand and perfect paid traffic. The down side with paid traffic once you stop paying for traffic your traffic stops.
So the only other option is free traffic. And you create this free traffic by creating content, this is known as content marketing. Remember all the internet is – is content. And you’re content could be written, videos, a podcast, a video blog etc.
Free traffic does take longer to develop but unlike paid traffic, free traffic can keep sending traffic to your site for years after you’ve created the content.
And even though it’s “free traffic” there’s still a cost and that’s your time to create the content that will generate the traffic.
Consistently Create Content
So forget all the other things and focus just on your content – set a simple goal – a 1000 words per day. If you can’t do that and I say that because we all have lives and families.
Shoot for a 1000 words every 2 days. And then follow these 7 steps for getting your content ranked.
Myself and many other people I know have been using these 7 steps for a long time and they work. But they only work if you’re consistent. Posting content every so often is not going to cut it no matter what steps you use.
Getting noticed is getting harder and harder every day – so you need to be consistent.
And no it’s not easy – but if you truly want to succeed online you’re going to have to do the work, there’s no way around it.
And once you have money coming in then you can look at outsourcing your content.
You may not be able to outsource all of it. But if you can outsource 5 or 10 articles per month and your schedule is to post every 2 days. With 10 articles being written for you – you have 20 days of content and you only have to write for the other 5 days to fill out your month.
Go On A Writing Binge
Set aside a few days and just write, do nothing else. And depending on things you can crack out 5, 10 or even 15 – 1000 word articles. Now schedule them to automatically post for you. If you don’t know how to do that I did a training video on how to schedule your posts in wordpress
You now have a buffer because you have content scheduled to post, now you can write with a little less pressure. Keep that buffer and you’re golden.
A 1000 words a day – simple but very effective.
And yep, some posts may be longer and heck maybe some will be less than a 1000 words – don’t worry about it.
I see people driving themselves nuts trying to find the magic secret number of the word count in posts.
And of course you’ll get a hundred different answers on what the magic number is which just ends up confusing more people. If you’re obsessing over word count you’re focused on the wrong thing. STOP!!!
Simply write until you’ve said what you need to say – and I find when you do that you naturally create useful, helpful and engaging content that seems to always come out to about a 1000 words or more.
Steve focused on just content and he has had over 10 million visitors to his website. Yep I said 10 Million!!
2) Don’t Focus On The Money
Ok this probably sounds weird, but it’s true. If all you’re doing is focusing on making money – the reality is you’re not going to make much if any money.
I’ve seen so many newbies worry about which affiliate program to join so they monetize their website and that before even 1 person knows they have a website.
If you don’t have an audience monetizing your site is the last thing to be worried about. You first need traffic to your site before you can even think about monetizing your site. Don’t put the cart ahead of the horse.
Once you have consistent traffic coming to your site then you can start focusing on monetizing your site.
3) Build Your Mailing List
You want to be building your mailing list at all times. Yes you’re going to have visitors at your site but the reality is many of them will read your content not take action or simply leave.
And when they leave they’re gone. But if you have an optin form on your site you have the opportunity to get them on your mailing list.
Now you can start building a relationship with these people, and when people know like and trust you they will buy from you.
A mailing list is the most valuable asset you can have and no one can take that away from you. By constantly building your mailing list you’re increasing your marketing ability with a captive audience.
To get people on your list simply create some sort of ethical bribe to get peoples email address. So this could be a report, a cheat sheet or some kind an eBook. For me I created a mini video course.
But no matter what it is, it has to be of great value, it has to be free and most importantly it can’t be found any place else.
Now place this optin where it can always be seen. The top spot in your websites sidebar is best and I also include my optin form at the bottom of my posts and pages.
In order to build your mailing list and to have the ability to email your list you’re going to need an auto-responder service. Personally I use Aweber, but there are many services to choose from, simply find the one that works best for your budget and needs.
I did a more endepth post about email marketing here.
Remember Things Take Time
Content marketing takes time, it’s not going to happen overnight. But the great thing about content marketing is that is has a very long shelf life. I have content that I created years ago still sending traffic to my website.
And as you create more and more content your site will become more of an authority site, and with that you’ll find that your content will get indexed and ranked faster. And if you keep creating content things will just keep snow balling.
So start focusing on the things that matter and stop wasting time on the stuff that doesn’t matter.
