Learn About Affiliate Marketing – The Top 5 Questions I Get Asked
So many people want to learn about affiliate marketing. And I know this because I get asked all sorts of questions about affiliate marketing each and everyday.
So I thought why not put together a list of the most popular questions I get asked all the time all in one place.
So Why Listen To Me?
I've been online since 2000 and since 2005 I've been earning a fulltime income as an affiliate marketer. And since 2012 I've been helping anyone who are serious about building a growing an online affiliate marketing business through the wealthy affiliate.
Alright let's get to it...
Here's The 5 Most Asked Questions I Get About Affiliate Marketing
1) What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Simply put affiliate marketing is performance based marketing. So this means as an affiliate you earn a commission from the sale of the products or services you're marketing.
So for example let's say you have a website that's dedicated to weight loss, and for this example let's say Weight Watchers. So your site is focused on the weight watchers weight loss program.
So as an affiliate of weight watchers anyone that comes to your website and signs up to the weight watchers program through your affiliate link you would earn a commission.
2) How Much Does It Cost To Join An Affiliate Program?
It costs nothing to join an affiliate program. And if an affiliate program asks for an enrollment fee or a recurring fee to become an affiliate don't pay it. Go find another affiliate program.
3) Where Do I Find Reputable Affiliate Programs?
Like anything you always need to do your due diligence when it comes to any affiliate program.
There's two sources of affiliate programs:
- In-House Networks
- Third Party Networks
In-House - As the term suggests this is an affiliate program that is managed by the merchant themselves. The merchant is responsible for all the tracking and reporting as well as being responsible for calculating and dispersing of the affiliate payments.
Third Party - A third party network handles all the affiliate payments. It also takes care of all the tracking and reporting. The third party network also receives a small commission from the merchant for each transaction. So third party networks are very diligent when it comes to tracking, reporting and maintaining affiliate relationships.
So where can you find these two types of affiliate networks?
For in-house networks (private) all you have to do is a Google search. Simply search using the company or product name and then add + affiliate program to your search query. So let's use weight watchers again. Your search query would look like this:.
weight watchers + affiliate program
Now when you do your search you may find out that the companies affiliate program is handled by a third party network. And as in our example of weight watchers their affiliate program is handled by a third party network.
This brings us to affiliate networks. These networks represent some of the biggest companies in the world. There are plenty of affiliate networks to choose from. The ones I have listed below are the ones I'm associated with.
- Commission Junction - Now known as CJ.com - they represent hundreds of companies including weight watchers.
- Share-a-sale - They have everything from arts and music to health products.
- Click Bank - This network is all digital products.
- Rakuten Marketing (link share) - You'll find products ranging from automotive to travel.
Out of the two options In-House or Network - I prefer networks. Not only because each party (merchant and network) have a vested interest in affiliate relationships.
But the companies that are in these networks have to go through a vetting process. So this means not just any old company can become part of a reputable affiliate network.
Now with this said I do belong to a few In-House (private) affiliate programs but I know this people and their programs. I trust them completely so I don't have to worry about anything.
I'm just saying if you're not 100% comfortable with an in-house (private) program then choose to work through a third party affiliate program
4) How Much Money Can I Make?
I get asked this question more than any other question. And my reply always is:
"It All Depends On You"
You see I don't know you. I don't know your ability, your dedication or even your desire. Building a successful affiliate marketing business takes hard work. It's not just going to magically start making money. Despite what some so-called guru has told you.
That said, the level of income you can make as an affiliate in all honestly - the skies the limit. What you put into your business is what you're going to get out of it.
Take me for example; at the beginning of this post I told you I started online in 2000. But for the first 3 years of me being online I stumbled, I got scammed and I lost more money then I care to remember.
Not until I decided that I wasn't going to chase the next so called secret for making money online being pitched by some self-proclaimed putz guru - or better labeled liar's and con artists. When I stopped chasing pipe dreams and decided that I'm going to build a real business that's when I started making money.
And that happened in 2003, I made just over $300 - and then by 2005 I was making a full time income online and I have been growing my business and income every year since.
Every year thousands and thousands of people build and grow very successful affiliate marketing businesses. And if you're willing to put in the time and effort, there's absolutely no reason you can't so the same.
5) What's The Best Way To Get Started With Affiliate Marketing?
Before getting started with affiliate marketing or any online business you first have to have the right mindset.
Look if you're not prepared for what's involved with building a growing a successful online business you're chances of succeeding are diminished big time. Sure that's probably not what you want to hear but I'm not here to blow sunshine up your ass.
Not having the right mindset is the biggest killer for online success, hell any success. You could have all the right tools, resources and support but if you're weak minded and don't have that "I will do whatever it takes" to accomplish my goals attitude, well frankly you're screwed.
And I say that because I've seen it happen time and time again. A person hits a challenge and it's enough to make them quit and give up on thier goals. And it doesn’t have to be that way.
I did two posts inside the wealthy affiliate that will help you create the proper mindset for achieving anything you want to achieve.
Ok as for your affiliate business itself. I always tell people the best foundation to build your affiliate business on is a hobby or passion or even something that you're really interested in and what to learn more about.
And the reason I say that is you're going to be in this niche (hobby/passion) for a long time and you it's so much easier to build your business around something that you're really into instead of a niche that you have little or no interest in.
And finally make sure you get the proper guidance. There are a lot of people out there that are just itching to sidetrack you with promises of the latest toys and tools for building a business. And most of them are just scams and garbage.
