Alright, let’s take a closer look at Traveling Vineyard.

Ok, Who Is Traveling Vineyard?

Travelling Vineyard is a multilevel marketing company that sells wine and accessories and uses a party plan selling business model. They are headquartered in Ipswich, Massachusetts, United States.

The company was founded in 2001, and in April 2010 the company declared bankruptcy and in November 2010 Richard Libby and other investors purchased the Traveling Vineyard and restructured the company.

The restructuring idea of the company came about after Richard attended a pampered chef party. And he thought to himself. “If doing in-house parties selling kitchenware works so well, why wouldn’t it work well for wine?”

And today the travelling Vineyard has over 50,000 independent wine guides.

How Do You Make Money With Traveling Vineyard?

Travelling Vineyard says that their compensation plan is “proprietary information”, which I find to be completely ridiculous.

The only way that you can see their compensation plan is if you join without this information beforehand or you speak to an active wine guide.

Now the reason why I find it ridiculous they calling their compensation plan proprietary information. Is when you get right down to it a compensation plan simply spells out how you’re going to make money.

And this type of information is crucial for making an informed decision about whether or not you want to get involved with this type of business.

So, unless you’re ready to join without all this information or you’re willing to talk to a wine guide you’re going have a hard time finding any up-to-date detailed information regarding this compensation plan online.

I did find bits and pieces regarding their compensation plan but the most recent information I found was from 2017.

I even found a 2017 brochure that outlines their compensation plan but again I don’t know how accurate it is. Travelling Vineyard could’ve updated their compensation plan since then. Now if you want to read that brochure you can do so by clicking here.

Now, I certainly don’t want to provide you with misinformation when it comes to the compensation plan.

So again, that brings you back to either joining the company or contacting a active wine guide so they can be provided with up-to-date detailed compensation plan.

Now with that said, what I can say when it comes to multilevel marketing compensation plans there’s only 2 ways you’re going to make money.

The first way is through retail sales. And those retail sales can be done in a few ways. The main business model is to host a party and have a tasting and it’s there that you would sell your wine.

You also get a replicated website where you can direct people to make purchases through your e-commerce website.

Now, in their income disclosure statement they do tell you what you would earn in regards to commissions. And that commission structure is shown in the image below.

The other way that you’re going to earn money is by recruiting people into your business. And this is where the compensation plan structure comes into play.

So, depending how they have designed this compensation plan. You’re going to have to meet certain requirements and qualifications and maintain those requirements and qualifications in order to earn the bonuses that are available to you through the different ranks within the compensation plan.

Now again, taking information from that income disclosure statement, and that brochure that I provided you the link to. You’ll find the following ranks available in their compensation plan are:

  • Wine guide
  • 1st Star leader
  • 2nd Star leader
  • 3rd Star leader
  • 4th Star leader
  • Team leader
  • Senior team leader
  • Director
  • Ruby director
  • Emerald director
  • Diamond director
  • 1 star diamond director
  • 2 Star diamond director
  • 3 Star diamond director
  • 4 Star diamond director

I wish I could provide you more detailed information about their compensation plan but again I didn’t want to provide you any misinformation with what I found online.

So, if you’re serious about joining this business opportunity then you can just join on your own where you will be provided the compensation plan within your back office.

Or, probably the more prudent move would be to contact a active wine guide and let them know up front that you’re still in the research phase of deciding whether or not you want to join.

And the reason why you want to be upfront with this wine guide is you don’t want to get their hopes up thinking that you’re already at that stage of wanting to join when in reality you’re at the stage where you just trying to figure things out.

So, Can You Expect To Make Money With Traveling Vineyard?

As with any multilevel marketing business there is the opportunity to make money.

But the harsh reality is when it comes to MLM businesses, the majority of people don’t make any significant money. In fact, most people just end up losing money.

Now travelling Vineyard does provide an income disclosure statement however, the most recent income disclosure statement I could find was from 2017.

And if you look at this income disclosure statement, you’ll see that 72.42% of active wine guides only made on average $380.00 for the entire year. That’s a whopping $31 per month.

ravelling vineyard income disclosure statement

And it’s not until you get to the rank of Ruby director where people are earning a modest full-time income. And even at that only 0.35% of people within the travelling vineyard are Ruby directors.

Now this income disclosure statement as I said was from 2017, but I’m sure the success rate of people within this business hasn’t gotten any better. In fact, my thought is if things were better, they probably would have a more up-to-date income disclosure statement available.

Also keep in mind, this income disclosure statement does not account for the expenses that wine guides have incurred while trying to build their business.

Which brings me back to the fact that most people within this business opportunity are probably losing money.

What Are People Saying About Traveling Vineyard?

I did some digging around for customer reviews and not surprising I found just as many people that were very happy with the company, the product and its business, as there were people not happy at all with the product, company, or business opportunity.

raveling vineyard complaint

And others complained about the price of wines. While others companied that guests at parties were not told ahead of time that each guest would pay $9.95 shipping fee on their order of wine.

When it comes to reviews such as these you need to take them with a grain of salt. Not everyone is going to love a company.

Sure, you can use these to help guide you when making your decision. But when it comes right down to it. It’s how you feel about the opportunity. Not what others tell you.

So, if it feels right, then move forward. If it does not sit right with you, then maybe you should pass on things.

What I Like About Traveling Vineyard

#1) Affordable Bottle Price

Unlike a lot of MLM companies out there that sell overpriced products. I found the prices of their wines very reasonable.

#2) Real Business Opportunity

There is a genuine home-based business opportunity to whomever is interested in this type of business.

#3) Income Disclosure Statement

Even though it’s not an up-to-date income disclosure statement you do still have access to one allowing you to make a more informed decision based on the numbers.

#4) Reasonable Startup Costs

Compared to many other multilevel marketing business opportunities getting started with the travelling vineyard is not that expensive.

And you do get a lot for what you pay for and you’re not just paying to join and getting nothing in return.

What I Didn’t Like About Traveling Vineyard

#1) Low Income Potential

Multilevel marketing in itself is a horrible business model and provides very low income potential for the people that do join MLM companies. And this is further reinforced by the income disclosure statement provided by travelling Vineyard.

87.3% of their members earned on average $980 or less per year. That’s on average $81.66 or less per month. A far cry from earning any significant income. And remember this does not take into account the expenses incurred by the people involved in this business.

#2) Hidden Compensation Plan

They say their compensation plan is  “proprietary information” and can’t be shared publicly and is only available to a current Wine Guides. I find this ridiculous. All the compensation plan is as basic math spelling out how people make money and get paid.

So, how can you make an informed decision regarding this business opportunity if you don’t know what you have to do in order to earn money with this business? You can’t.

#3) Home Party Marketing Strategy

The marketing for building your business is done through home parties (direct sales). Now while this can be effective, this type of business model is highly susceptible to failure.

Plus, it’s a very expensive way to market your products. You have the cost of the wine, food, travel, gas, etc. And there is no guarantee anyone will buy anything.

Not everyone is going to excel through direct marketing. Sure, your business may do well with the first few home parties because their friends and family. But expanding beyond that circle can be a challenge for many.

Many people doing home parties find it more and more difficult to schedule new parties, especially once you have held multiple ones for the same audience.

Also, with the home party concept there are no territories. So, chances are there could be more than one travelling vineyard wine guide within your area.

#4) Recruiting

When it comes to multilevel marketing yes you can make money just retailing products. But in order to qualify for the different bonuses that are available through MLM compensation plans.

That requires you to constantly be recruiting people into your business. And the reason why you constantly have to recruit people is that you’ll find over 50% of the people that you do get involved with this business opportunity will quit within the 1st year.

So not only are you having to sell products to earn income. You’re constantly going to have to sell people on the idea of getting involved with this type of business so you can be eligible for those bonuses.

#5) Added Shipping Cost

The price of a bottle of wine seems to be in line with wine you can find at your local liquor store. But the issue many customers have is the added shipping cost.

People who attend a tasting and bought wine. There is $9.95 shipping fee per person to ship the wines to you the host. So that $16.99 bottle of wine now costs your guest $26.94.

My Final Opinion Of Traveling Vineyard

Is travelling Vineyard offering a legitimate business opportunity? Absolutely they are. But is it really that great of an opportunity? Personally, I don’t think it’s that great of all.

The 2 biggest issues I have with this opportunity besides the fact you can’t find the compensation plan to learn what you have to do in order to make money.

The 1st issue is this is multilevel marketing. The multilevel marketing business model certainly favors the company, but it does not favor anyone that gets involved. The success rate in multilevel marketing is extremely low.

Less than 1% of people that get involved with multilevel marketing actually make a full-time living. Some people may make a few hundred dollars per year if they’re lucky. While the majority of people lose money.

The other issue I have is the marketing plan. This business model is based on the home party direct selling marketing plan. And that’s certainly not a plan for everybody. You have to be highly skilled at network marketing and sales in order to be successful using this type of marketing plan.

Plus, with this type of marketing plan there are a lot of additional expenses that are going to be incurred.

So personally for those reasons this is nothing that I would get involved with but it’s also not a business that I would really recommend for anybody.

Now of course this is just my opinion and this may be the perfect business model for you. Maybe you love wine, being a salesperson, network marketing and setting up in-home parties.

And if that’s the case then maybe this is the business for you and if it is, I wish you nothing but success.

But here’s the thing…

You don’t have to join a multilevel marketing company in order to start your own home-based business. There are far better ways of making money online from home.

The way I personally make money online from home is through Affiliate Marketing.

And unlike multilevel marketing as an affiliate marketer, you never have to recruit anybody to build your business. Nor do you have to sell anything to anybody in order to make money.

And what I personally think is one of the biggest advantages of affiliate marketing is that you can build your business around any interest, hobby, or passion you have. Incuding wine.

And as affiliate marketer you’re in 100% control and ownership of your business. With an MLM you’re not.

If you’d like to learn more about how to build a thriving online affiliate marketing business from home. Then you should check out Wealthy Affiliate.

They have all the training, tools, resources, and personal one-on-one support available to you while you’re building your online business.

    • Hey Harry, It does provide an opportunity but it’s certainly not the best option available, that’s for sure. I’m glad you’ve taken the time to do your due diligence, not everyone does.

      Take care.
