What Is LegalShield?

LegalShield is a multilevel marketing company that provides legal services for people who live in the United States and within all provinces and territories in Canada. Legal services include everything from helping you with your small business such as contracts and agreements and civil litigation if you need it.

As well as legal services for individuals and families with services that range from estate planning to family law. And identity theft protection.

Now back in 1972 when Harland Stonecipher founded the company. It started out as a sportsman’s club.

And as the story goes Harland was in a car accident in 1969. Now even though the accident wasn’t his fault the other person still filed suit against Harland for the accident. Now, Harland had health, life, and vehicle insurance but is still required to hire a lawyer to defend himself in court.

Now as we all know lawyers don’t come cheap so Harland struggled to pay the legal expenses. And then after doing some research on how European legal expense plans worked he established the Sportsman’s Motor Club to help reimburse his members for legal fees when it came to vehicle accidents.

And then in 1976, it was incorporated as Prepaid Legal Services inc. Fast forward to 2011 Pre-Paid Legal was purchased by MidOcean Partners for $650 million. And that’s when they change their name from Pre-Paid Legal to LegalShield.

Making Money

Now like all multilevel marketing companies the way you’re going to earn money is by personal sales and advancing your way through the compensation plan.

And these advancements are gained by meeting certain qualifications required to reach the different ranks. And in this particular compensation plan, LegalShield has 7 different ranks.

LegalShield Advancing Through The Compensation Plan

So, like most MLM compensation plans they can be a little confusing to understand. Especially with terms like break away, generations, and so on.

So I’m just going to give you a quick overview of the different ranks and what you need to do to accomplish each rank.

You can read the complete compensation plan by clicking here. I also found what’s called a Success Guide. This is a 125-page guide covering everything about this business.

So, the first rank is Associate. This is where everybody starts.

As you make your first membership sale you now qualify to earn commissions through the compensation plan. Now in this compensation plan commissions are paid on the advanced system.

So, you’ll be paid 50% advance of your commissions until you either Fast Start qualify, or you move to the next rank which is Senior Associate. And then at that time, you’ll begin receiving advanced commissions.

At the associate level, you can receive a personal sales advance of $67.52.

Fast Start

If you sell $60 in premium, plus recruit 1 new associate or personally sell $180 in premium within the first 20 days you will advance to senior associate.

Senior Associate

You can reach this rank by $90 in premium, plus recruit 1 new Associate or personally selling $180 in premium.

As a senior associate, you can receive a personal sales advance of $135.04.

Manager

You can reach this level by having 3 legs with an active Associate in each leg and having $400 organizational premium written or personally selling $400 in premium.

As a manager, you can receive a personal sales advance of $157.54.

Sr. Manager

You can get to this level by having 3 legs with an active Senior Associate in each leg and have $1,350 organizational premium written or personally selling $1,350 in premium.

As a senior manager, you can receive a personal sales advance of $180.05.

Director

You can reach the director level by having 3 legs with an active Manager in each leg and have $2,700 organizational premium written or personally selling $2,700 in premium.

And as a director, you can receive a personal sales advance of $213.81.

Sr. Director

You can get to the senior director level being Director level and have a minimum of $700 premium written (including personal sales) with no more than $400 premium written from one leg. Must be Performance Club qualified.

At the senior director level, you can receive a personal sales advance of $258.82.

Executive Director

And to reach the final level of Executive Director you must be at the Director level with $1,400 premium written (personal or organizational), cannot count more than $650 premium written from any 1 leg, and qualify for the Activity Requirement. Qualify in one month to receive a commission increase on all organizational sales the following month.

And at the executive director level, you can receive a personal sales advance of $315.09.

So, Can You Make Money?

With any legitimate business opportunity, of course, you can make money. But we both know that’s going to be depended on 2 things.

Your willingness and commitment to do what it takes in order to build your business.

LegalShield does provide an income disclosure statement on its website.

And if you’re not familiar with what an income disclosure statement is. That statement shows the average earnings of all active associates working in this business.

And they state within their income disclosure statement that associates that have been with the company for 0 to 2 years and had at least one sale had an annual average earning of $798.00 for 2019.

That breaks down to $66.50 per month in earnings for the entire year of 2019. They further go on to state that 73% of all associates made less than $1000 in 2019.

They also include a chart showing the number of years people have been associates and the average income these people earn during the different lengths of time they have been with the company.

So, as you can see this chart is showing individual sales and group sales.

LegalShield Associate Average Annual Earning

And you can see for yourself that people are not really earning what I would call anywhere close to a full-time income doing this business. And you also have to take into account that these numbers aren’t showing what people are spending to build and grow their business so I’m sure these incomes are even less.

The one that caught my attention the most is the 20+ year associates. If you look at people who have been in this business for 20+ years. Their average individual sales are $7400 per year. And the group sales are $15,104 for the entire year.

And the reason why this caught my attention is that I make more in one month as an affiliate marketer than the people that have been in this business for 20+ years make for an entire year.

And I’ve never had to recruit anybody to build my business and I’ve never sold anything to anyone. Nor do I have to meet idiotic qualifications just so I can earn a commission.

What Are People Saying About LegalShield?

When it comes to any company’s product or service you’re going to find people that have nothing but good things to say about that company. And then, of course, you’re going to find people that have nothing good to say about the company.

It’s all going boiled down to that person’s personal experience with the company. So, with that in mind, I started searching for customer reviews, complaints, and things of that nature.

So, the first place I headed to was the Better Business Bureau’s website. And at the time of this writing, I found 174 complaints about their service. Everything ranging from the service itself to trying to get refunds for memberships.

I then found 185 reviews on the Consumer Affairs website. And again, there are positive reviews and negative reviews.

The next place I headed to was TrustPilot. And there I found 918 reviews and they have a rating of 4.1 out of 5. This breaks down to 69% of people that were reviewing LegalShield found it to be excellent.

Now all of these resources are commenting on the service itself and the satisfaction they are getting from LegalShield, not the business opportunity.

But despite that, these comments and reviews are things you need to take into consideration if you’re thinking about getting involved with this business.

How’s The Support?

When it comes to support you’re going to have your own associate’s portal where you can access resources such as their success guide to help you build your business.

They also have an Associates-only Facebook page where you can connect with other associates. As well as getting support from the person that sponsored you.

What I Like About LegalShield

#1) Low Startup

At $99 for your starter kit. Compared to other multilevel marketing companies this is a very low startup fee.

#2) It’s A Real Business

LegalShield is offering anyone who’s interested a legitimate home-based business opportunity.

#3) No Inventory

Unlike other multilevel marketing companies, you’re not selling a physical product. So, this means you don’t have to carry any inventory.

What I Didn’t Like About LegalShield

#1) No One’s Making Any Money

According to their own income disclosure statement, 73% of the people that have been involved with LegalShield as a business have made less than $1000 for the entire year.

And looking at this graph even experienced people that have 4 years in this business on average only earned $1735.00 in personal sales in 2019. That’s $144.58 per month in earnings.

I’m sorry, that’s ridiculous if you’re only earning $144.00 per month after being in a business for 4 years.

#2) This Is Not Your Business

One of the biggest misconceptions people have when they get involved with a multilevel marketing business is thinking that they own their own business. You don’t own your business.

When it comes to multilevel marketing you don’t have 100% control or ownership of your business. When you get involved with an MLM you’re bound by the rules and restrictions of that company.

So, if the MLM company changes the qualifications (compensation plan) you have to meet in order to earn commissions there’s nothing you can do about it. You either have to play along or quit.

#3) Recruitment

There’s no way around it if you want to climb the ranks within their compensation plan and become eligible for the bonuses available at those different ranks.

You’re going to have to recruit people on a regular basis in order to build your business.

#4) High Failure Rate

Unfortunately, when it comes to the multilevel marketing business model the percentage of people that succeed with MLM is very small. In fact, MLM business plans have a failure rate of around 95%. Source: Jobs in Marketing

#5) Must Love Sales

Do you want to become a salesperson? If not then this is definitely not the business for you. Because having excellent sales and network marketing skills is a must in order for your business to be successful.

My Thoughts About LegalShield

There’s no doubt that LegalShield is a legitimate company with a legitimate business opportunity. And if you like what LegalShield has to offer as a home-based business. That’s great.

Just remember the success of this business is going to be dependent on your ability to sell.

So, you must really enjoy selling as well as network marketing so you can find clients to build your business. And if sounds like you then this could be the business for you.

But if you don’t like selling or having to consistently recruit people to build your business. You’re going to have difficulty making this a success.

Now of course you can learn to enjoy this, but the only way going to know if you’re going like this or not is by jumping in with both feet and doing it.

Now, I’ve talked to a lot of people when it comes to making money with an online business. And I’ve been told time and time again that they have no interest in becoming a salesperson or having to recruit people on a daily basis in order to build the business.

So that’s why as an alternative I always recommend taking a look at Affiliate Marketing. Because with affiliate marketing first and foremost you own and control 100% of your business.

You’re the one in charge when it comes to your business. You call the shots. You don’t have to meet any ridiculous quotas or qualifications in order to earn money as you do with an MLM.

Plus, you never have to recruit anybody to build your business, nor do you have to become a salesperson in order to make money. And the best part is you can build your business around any interest, hobby, or passion that you have.

Now if you’d like to learn more about affiliate marketing and how you would go about building your business using 4 very simple steps.

The best resource that can provide you with step-by-step training, tools, resources, and personal one-on-one support while building your business is Wealthy Affiliate.

Thanks for dropping by and I hope you found my review of LegalShield helpful.

I believe in you.
