How To Get Higher Ranking On Google – 9 Simple Steps
I get asked all the time how to get higher ranking on Google.
Well there is no real secret but I do have specific steps I do each time I create content.
And by following these steps more often than not my content gets ranked at the top of the search results.
So here’s the 9 steps I follow each time I create and publish content.
1) I Do Proper Keyword Research
Everything starts with proper keyword research. So I search for those keywords people would use when doing a specific search in Google. And then it’s these kewords I use to build my content around.
So what consitutes a good keyword?
The best keywords are ones that have good search volume and have low competition. And to find those keywords I use Jaxxy as my keyword research tool.
Now I’m not looking for that one keyword to hit things out of the park. There’s always way to much competition for those keywords so it’s makes no sense fighting for those keywords because you’ll never rank for them.
So I’m always searching for the low hanging fruit keywords.
And those would be keywords that have more than 50 searches per month and have less than 100 competing pages. And the less competing pages of course the better.
Because the lower the competition the easier it is to get top ranking within the search results.
2) I Check The SERPS Regarding My Competition
I never use to do this. But now I do. And the reason is when I found great keywords with low competition I would say “alright I can rank for this easy”.
And then my content would not be found any where and I could’t understand why, until I actually checked the SERPS.
And what I found was, sure there was low competition but that competition was huge authority sites. And trying to knock these sites from the first page would be nearly impossible so there’s no point wasting time doing that.
So if I find that the keyword is going to be going up against this big players and huge authority sites, I’ll forget that keyword and move onto my other keywords that are not fighting these kinds of sites.
Let everyone else knock their heads together fighting for this rankings. And in doing that, I have 100’s of first page ranking in the search engines with my other keywords.
3) How I Write My Content
Here’s all you have to do:
Use your keyword(s) in the title, use it in the first paragraph and then write naturally from there. That’s all there is to it.
Also keep your paragraphs to 3 to 4 sentences long. This makes things easier for your visitors to read, instead of them having to wade through huge blocks of text, which is a real pain in the ass to read.
I did a post inside the wealthy affiliate on the steps I use to write my content. You can check that post out by clicking here.
4) I Add Relevant Pictures To My Content
When it comes to images less is more. You just neede to have a few images within your content. And make sure the images you use relate to the content at that point within your content.
So if you’re starting a paragraph off talking about fish, you can have a nice picture of a fish. And it’s best to have your images justified to the right.
The reason for this is the picture will not interrupt the flow of the reader. You want to make reading your content pleasurable.
Now of course there will be times when you can’t do that and you need to have a larger image. No problem, just have the image centered and your content above and below it. In fact you’ll see what I mean in a minute.
Have your first image above the fold, meaning it will be seen without having to scroll down your site. You’ll notice on this post my first image is above the fold.
And make sure you don’t just grab images off the internet. Either buy your images or use one of many free image sites to find what you need.
Of if you have the tools you can always create your own images. Here’s a list of free image sites you can get for your content.
5) I Make Sure I Do Some Internal Linking
You want to link to other relevant content within your site. This is known as an internal linking.
Why do this?
For a few reasons, the obvious one is you’re providing more useful information to your readers. But the other important reason is you’re telling Google that your content is so valuable that you link to it.
By doing this your site can see faster indexing and better ranking and have more credibility with Google, and all of that is a good thing.
So link to your other content. Oh and link to an authority site when you can, like wikipedia or a news site. You’ll notice I have done both in this post.
6) Ok, Now I Customize The Meta And Description Tags
If you use an SEO plugin like All In One SEO, you’ll see below the editor in wordpress where you can customize your meta and description tags.
Here’s an screenshot of this post with the meta title and description completed. Ignore the link (green) below the title, that’s a temporary link that’s given prior to the post be published.
The reason you want to do this is so you can have your keyword(s) in the title and within the description (you’ll see this is what I have).
This is great for SEO plus the meta title and the description is what’s visable in the search results.
The meta title allows for 60 characters and the descriptions allows for 160 characters, so make them count.
If you don’t do it yourself they will be automatically populated with the first 60 and 160 characters of your title and content. And that’s not always a good thing.
7) Share Your Content Socially
Whatever social platforms you use make sure to share your content.
Now I’m not a big fan of social media, I find it most of it white noise full of useless information, but hey that’s me and that’s a whole other article.
But I do share my content on G+. And the reason is the things you post on G+ can help with your ranking.
8) Time To Fetch
Inside your webmaster tools under Crawl you’ll see a feature called Fetch As Google. You want to use this feature with all your content.
Doing so can have Google come and crawl your content in a little as a few minutes. And when you content crawled faster it is indexed faster, so now it has the opportunity to rank faster.
If you’ve never done this here’s a post I did showing you how to use the fetch tool inside webmaster tools.
9) I Make A Video When I Can (optional)
I’m primarily a video marketer. The reason is that video content can rank higher and faster then just text content, plus people are visual.
If you’re comfortable making a video go for it. You can do a screencast style or a talking head style video. make sure you SEO the video properly.
If you don’t know how to properly SEO a video I did a very detailed post about how to properly SEO a video
Once you have your video on YouTube grab the embed code and place it within your content. A great way to naturally add video is with a lead in.
So you could say…
“For a better understanding check out this video”
Or you could lead in with
“check out my video for further explanation”
“I made a short video so you can see what I’m talking about”
Rinse And Repeat
Now simply do this with all your content.
