How To Earn Money From A Blog – The Top 4 Ways
I get this question or a form of this question asked by people all the time.
But no matter how it’s asked everyone wants to know “How to earn money from a blog”.
And if you’re asking this question – you’re not alone.
More and more people are interested in earning money online. Some just want to earn a few extra dollars while others have aspirations of making a full time income online.
So today I’m going to share with you 4 ways to make money from a blog (website). One of which is my own top money making method.
But First – Real Expectations
I want to be completely straight with you and not blow any sunshine up your butt.
Not everyone that tries to make money from a blog (website) will become rich. In fact those people that do are in the minority not the majority.
I’m sorry if I just burst your bubble, but I’m not here to make any false promises.
YES!! Absolutely you can make money from a blog (website).
But it takes hard work, dedication and persistence. And the truth of the matter is it just does not happen for everyone.
And like I said – it’s because it does take hard work, dedication and persistence. Unfortunately these are things not everyone is willing to do or has in them – sorry that’s the harsh truth.
Also, before I get into things remember this.
Any online monetization method, and I don’t care what it is. It comes down to traffic. The more traffic you drive to your site the more opportunity there is for you to earn money.
Ok let’s get to it…
Making Money From Your Blog
Google adsense is a passive way of earning money by allowing related Google ads from the Google Network to appear on your website. This is known as Contextual Advertising.
So for example, if your blog is about gardening Google Adsence will put garden related ads on your site. And if someone clicks through an ad displayed on your site you make money.
But don’t get too excited right of the bat, you’re not going to make a lot of money for these clicks. Simply because in most cases you’re only going to be paid
pennies per click.
Yes, there are ads that pay over a dollar but that’s rare.
Now with that said it’s very possible to make four figures per month or in some cases a six figure income just with adsence. But it will take time.
If there is one tip I can give you it’s this: Ad Placement
You’ll discover that proper ad placement plays a significant role in your overall adsence income. One simple change in placement can skyrocket your earnings.
So the thing to do is track your click throughs for a certain period of time. It could be two weeks or even a month. Now change your ad placement and track those stats.
And keep doing this until you find the best place for your ads. And don’t be afraid to use prime real estate on your site while testing. So this means you may have to remove or move certain things on your site for testing purposes.
Sure you may move an element that is making money, but remember you could be adding an element (adsence) that could make more money. And you’ll never know unless you’re willing to test things.
So be bold – you’re goal here is to maximize your earnings.

- Vibrant Media
- Clicksor (both eCPM and pay per click)
Sell A Service
When people come online they are more often than not looking for a solution to something. And your service can be the solution people are looking for.
What are you good at? What could you sell through your blog (website)?
Here’s some services you could sell on your site:
- Design (everything from brochures to logos)
- Data entry
- Financial planning
- Software design
- Computer coding
- Social media manager
- Content writer
- Article writing
- Web designer (wordpress, joomla, ruby on rails)
- Website management
- Database administration
- PPC management
- Video creation or editing
- 3D animation
- Custom twitter templates
- Motion graphics
- Virtual assistant
- Photoshop design
There are so many things that you could offer people online, honestly the skies the limit.
As for collecting payments for your service you can do this through Paypal.
Create And Sell Your Own Digital Product
One of the easiest digital products to sell is information. Right this minute you have information that people will pay for.
So for example let’s say you have a lot of knowledge about losing weight naturally. The simplest step is to create a 30 to 40 page word document and then turn into a PDF and sell that.
As I mentioned earlier you can set up payment through PayPal. And as your business grows you may want to consider SamCart.
Samcart will handle all the orders for you, provide you with custom page checkout templates, one click upsells, split test your marketing funnel and best of all they also allow you to have affiliates.
You can even go one step further and sell your book on Kindle and make even more sales.
Affiliate marketing is my top money method for making making money from my blog (website).
If you’re a regular visitor you know that I’ve been making a full time income online as of 2005 thanks to affiliate marketing.
The great thing about affiliate marketing is that you don’t have to create a product or service, you don’t have to worry about processing payments, customer service, refunds, inventory or anything like that.
In reality you just cash the checks.
Yeah I know that’s the simplified explanation of affiliate marketing, but in reality that’s all it is. Recommending a product or service and getting paid when people buy that product or service.
Now the most successful affiliate marketers are the ones that build their business around a hobby or a passion. Starting out with something your care or know a lot about gets you 75% of the way there to having a very successful online business.
The reason being is that you’re going to be spending a lot of time talking about whatever it is you’re going to be talking about. And it’s a lot easier to talk about something you have a big interest in or passion about.
So the first question I get asked when talking about affiliate marketing is…
Where Do I Find Affiliate Products?
There are several places to find affiliate products.
One of the most popular places is Amazon.com. Amazon has what is called the Amazon Associates Program. Basically this is their affiliate program.
You simply sign up to become an amazon associate. And once approved you can sell anything that is available on Amazon.
Now there are pro’s and con’s being an Amazon associate.
The Biggest Cons About Amazon Are:
- The commissions are typically very low. Between 4 and 8% respectively.
- Not everyone in the United States can be an Amazon Associate. This all comes down to what state you live in. And this seems to change all the time.
- They only have a 24 hour cookie for most sites. This means if someone clicks through your amazon link and they don’t buy within 24 hours you’ll miss out on the commission.
The Biggest Pros About Amazon Are:
- Huge trust factor. People trust Amazon big time so this really works in your favor.
- If someone clicks your Amazon link and then they decide to buy something else. You’ll also get the commission for that sale too.
- Amazon does all the work for you when it comes to trying to make the sale.

Another place to find affiliate products and services is through…
An affiliate network is the intermediary between the publisher (affiliate) and the advertiser (affiliate company). Some of the biggest companies can be found in affiliate networks.
So basically you have hundreds of companies all in one place offering their affiliate program. And the great thing is all the companies that are in affiliate networks have to go through a screening process.
So this means they have to meet certain standards, and this makes sure you’re dealing with reputable companies.
To access an affiliate network you need to apply to that affiliate network, this is your screening process. So you’ll want to have your website up and running prior to applying as most networks will want to see a functioning website.
Also the affiliate network takes care of all the processing of all sales. So you will be paid by the network not the company your promoting. They also provide banners ads and some networks even offer other marketing material.
There are hundreds of affiliate networks. And you may have to join more than one to find the company product you’re looking for.
Here are the ones I’ve used:
You’ll find in most affiliate networks the commissions on average are around 15%. With the exception of Clickbank where they can be over 75%.
Your next resource for finding affiliate products is through….
Private Affiliate Programs
To find private affiliate programs all you have to do is a simple search in Google.
Simply type in the product name or company name and then add “+ affiliate program” to your search query. Now the search results will give you the listing of their affiliate program.
Now it’s time to do your due diligence. Unlike Amazon and affiliate networks you’re not protected as much. You are at the mercy of this private affiliate program.
So you want to make sure who ever you’re getting involved with has a legitimate affiliate program. I have heard of some horror stories of affiliates not getting money owed to them.
Now I don’t want to scare you, my point is to do your homework before jumping into to bed with any private affiliate program. I have been associated with a lot of private programs and have never had one ounce of trouble with any of them including my top affiliate program.
And it’s because I did my homework.
Ok Now What?
Before you can attempt to make any money with any of these methods you’re going to need a website.
Now with the advances in programs and technology creating a website is not as daunting as it use to be.
In fact the web builder I recommend to everyone is called Site Rubix.
With this free website builder you can have your website up and running in less than a minute.
I did a short video showing how fast and easy this builder is to use. You can check out that video here.
So there you have it. Four very lucrative ways of making money from a blog (website). Of course I’m very partial to affiliate marketing because it’s provided me with a fantastic full time income since 2005.
