Can Digital Marketing Be A Side Hustle? Yes, Here’s 23 Ways

Can Digital Marketing Be A Side Hustle

So can digital marketing be a side hustle?

In a word, Absolutely digital marketing can be a side hustle. In fact, in a Zapier report, 40% of Americans in 2022 have a side hustle.

And with inflation going through the roof, it’s getting harder and harder to pay for the basics like food and shelter.

Now the economy may suck at this moment in time. But we have to look at the advantages we have living in a digital world.

Before digital, if you wanted to earn some extra money you had to physically go out and find a second job.

But now you don’t have to do that. With a laptop/desktop and an internet connection, you can find a side hustle and never have to leave your house.

Or if you have that nomad spirit with a digital side hustle and your laptop you can make that cash from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection.

Now I know there are a ton of side hustles that take you out of the home like dog walking, Uber, etc. And many of them are great options.

But I wanted to focus on side hustles that you can do from your home. For example, not everyone wants to use their car for delivery or Uber, which will cost you money not to mention the wear and tear on your car.

This list of side hustles can all be done from your home and can be started with little or no money.

Oh, I also want to mention that these side hustles can start as a side gig for extra money. But with the exception of a few all can be turned into full-time income if that’s your end goal.

Alright, let’s get to it.

1) Start A Blog And Use Affiliate Marketing

affiliate marketing

Now I know starting a blog and affiliate marketing are two separate things. But when you combine them together they definitely provide you with the highest earning potential.

In fact, this is the side hustle that I started while I was still working. And by consistently working on my business I eventually turned it into what has become my full-time income since 2005.

Now, this is definitely a slow burn. And what I mean by that is that by starting a blog and then using affiliate marketing as your revenue model. Your income is not going to happen overnight.

Realistically you’re looking at 6 to 12 months maybe even longer before you start generating any type of revenue. Now through my experience usually after 12 months, you could be earning between $500 and $1000 per month.

But that’s not to say you couldn’t be earning more and some people have earned significantly more money within a 12-month period.

I’m just saying if you decide to start a blog and use affiliate marketing as your revenue model just understand that you are building a real business and it’s going to take time.

But if your goal is to build a business that becomes a full-time income this is definitely the route to go.

If you want to learn more about how to build a thriving affiliate marketing business here are the exact steps I use.

2) Become A Remote Call Center Agent

As a remote call agent, you would be handling inbound or even outbound calls. As the agent, you’d be identifying customers’ needs, answering questions, and solving problems.

As a remote call agent, you need computer skills that include navigating multiple tabs, and systems. You also need to be organized, flexible, friendly, and an effective communicator as well as calm under pressure.

And since you be working from home you need to have a quiet area where you can do your job and not be disturbed or have any background noise.

The average wage for a remote call agent typically starts at around $15.00 per hour.

You can find remote agent jobs through websites such as LiveOps and Flexjobs.

3) Open An Etsy Store

While Esty is the go-to place for independent crafters, and artists to sell their custom-made jewelry, clothing, home décor, art, toys and so much more.

You don’t have to be an artist that makes custom jewelry or clothing to open a store on Esty. One of the hottest categories on Esty is that of digital downloads.

And the great thing about a digital download is once you’ve created it you only need to create it once but then you can sell it over and over again. In fact, this is a great way to create a passive income.

And you have a wide variety of tools that you can use to build your digital downloads, such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Gimp, Inc Scape, etc.

But what if you’re not a graphic designer? No problem, you can go to places like Fiverr and have a graphic designer create your digital download for you and then sell those on your Esty store.

So, what digital downloads can you create? You can create…

  • Thank you cards
  • Printable planners
  • Digital planners
  • Logos
  • Business cards
  • social media templates
  • Printable cards such as birthday invitations
  • Etc…

4) Sell On eBay

Most people get started selling on eBay by selling unwanted things they have laying around their house.

Or if you want to take it a step further many people will scour flea markets, vintage stores, and even garage sales for items that you could resell on eBay.

Now there are fees associated with selling on eBay but if you’re wise with your pricing and your product purchases you definitely can make a good side income selling items on eBay. Here’s a link to eBay’s seller fees.

5) Become A Virtual Assistant

With more and more people looking for help running their businesses virtual assistants are in high demand nowadays.

And the reason for this demand is instead of hiring someone full-time they can hire a virtual assistant to take care of specific work-related tasks on a per-task basis.

Now as a virtual assistant depending on whom you’re working for can pay you an hourly rate ($10 to $20) or you can get paid a fixed per-week or per-month salary.

As a virtual assistant, your range of responsibilities will vary from client to client.

Tasks could include administrative, managing email accounts, scheduling appointments, creating content, social media, scheduling appointments, graphic design, etc.

6) Freelance Writer

Freelance Writer

Every website on the Internet needs content. And not all website owners want to create that content or even have the time to create that content.

And that’s where becoming a freelance writer can be a wonderful side hustle. Now freelance writers just don’t write content for websites.

You could write e-books, magazine articles, press releases, blog posts, newsletters, ghostwriting, etc.

Now depending on how far you want to take this side hustle, you can earn a few hundred dollars a month or you can earn $5000 plus per month.

Websites like Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancer are platforms where you can offer your writing services.

Also, AI writing tools like Jasper can help you write faster allowing you to take on more jobs and make more money.

7) Start An Ecommerce Site

A report by Statista noted that global eCommerce sales were approximately 5.2 trillion U.S. dollars. And it said this figure is to grow by 56% over the next few years reaching $8.1 trillion by 2026.

With growth numbers like that having your own eCommerce website is definitely a great side hustle that can be turned into a full-time income if that’s your goal.

And with resources such as Shopify that provide you with a store builder, themes, and an App Store to add more features and functionality to your online store starting your own eCommerce website is easier than ever.

And if you already have a website and you want to add an online store to your website you can use plugins such as Woo Commerce.

8) Sell On Fiverr

You can make a pretty good side income selling your skills on Fiverr. You’ll find people offering everything from content writing to website design and everything in between.

Now when Fiverr first got started gigs were only $5. But since then, Fiverr allows people to set their own rates. However, there are still freelancers willing to work for $5.

But nowadays you’re more likely to find people selling their skills for hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Now one thing I want to point out is Fiverr does take a 20% commission from all of your work and that includes tips people give you. So, if you’re charging $100 for a gig after Fiverr takes their commission you’re going to earn $80.

Now like everything, when you first start on Fiverr you want to see what other people who just started on Fiverr are charging within your skill set and charge the same.

And as you gain more credibility, gain positive ratings, and exposure you can then increase what you charge for your services.

9) Take Paid Online Surveys

Taking online surveys is definitely the king of extra money side hustles. The reason why I say that, is you’re certainly not going to get rich taking online surveys but they can definitely be a great source of some extra money.

Now, depending on how many reputable online survey sites you join you can earn anywhere from a few dollars per month to as much as $500 per month.

Now depending on what survey site you’re with and what survey you’re taking you could be earning as little as $0.50 for taking a survey or as much as $10 or more.

But I would say on average you’re only going to earn a few dollars for every survey that you take.

Now there are legitimate survey sites and there are a lot of scam survey sites out there. So, you must be wary and you must do your due diligence before you invest any time in taking an online survey.

Two of the most reputable survey sites are Survey Junkie and Swagbucks.

10) Test Apps & Websites

When it comes to testing websites and testing apps you don’t need to be a computer whiz in order to do that.

By testing websites and testing apps, you’re going to be using the site or app as a normal user would. But you as the tester are evaluating the user experience and the website or app’s functionality.

Now there are sometimes more complex user testing jobs where you’ll be known as a bug tester. And as that type of tester, you’re trying to break the website or app. What you’re doing is looking for technical issues.

Now to start testing websites and apps online obviously you’re going to need a computer, a high-speed Internet connection, and possibly a microphone and webcam.

The reason why you might need a microphone and webcam is you may be required to record your screen and your voice so you can give your opinions and feedback as you go.

Now when it comes to your income as a website and an app tester depending on the test on average you’ll earn anywhere from $5 to $30 per test.

This is definitely a true side hustle and you’re not going to get rich or turn this into a full-time gig. But it’s great for making extra cash.

There are plenty of resources where you can test websites and apps. But some of the more popular sites are:

When it comes to transcribing audio, you could be paid hourly or in some cases, you could be paid by the word.
