Best Self Employment Opportunities
So often I hear people saying "I want to work for myself, I want to be self-employed". But then many people get stumped on what they can do. So today I'm going to share with you some great self-employment opportunities including my #1 recommendation for online self-employment.
Don't Confuse Self-Employment With Work At Home
Before I talk about some of the different self-employment opportunities available, what do I mean "don't confuse self-employment with work at home".
Here's what I mean.
There is plenty of work at home jobs available. You can do data entry, you can do customer service, you can do customer support, you can be a B2B telemarker for lead generation. I could go on and on.
But these types of positions are not true self-employment. Sure you're working from your home but you’re still working for someone else. You're still being paid what this employer thinks you're worth. And you have to work on their schedule.
That's not being self-employed. That's simply working from home for someone else. Sure it has it's perks but in my books it's not true self-employment.
This Is Self-Employment
When I think of self-employment I think of having your own business where you are the captain of your own destiny. You're the boss, the BIG kahuna. You set your own hours and you don't have to check in or answer to a boss. That's self-employment!!
And yep you can still work from your home. That's what I do.
At Lot Less Risk
If you want to jump into the real world and start your own business many experts say that you should have 3 to 6 months of cash reserves. So that means if you had no new cash coming into your business for 3 to 6 months you would still be ok. But every business is different so you may need more than 6 months of reserve cash.
But with the internet you don't need a huge amount of money to get started nor a huge cash reserve so there is a lot less risk. In fact you can start a successful online business for less than $100 with a monthly running cost of less than $50.
And the other advantage of building your business online is you can do in your spare time while keeping your job. So gone is the financial stress because you still have a steady income.
And then when you're ready you can say goodbye to your boss because you're now financially self-sufficient - you're self-employed. That's exactly what I did and as you're reading this so are thousands of other people.
It should go without saying, but I'm saying it anyway. Using the internet to become self-employed is a very savvy way of reaching your self-employment goals.
Ok lets' get into some of the opportunities for online self-employment.
I've used Fiverr for many things, and it's great. Now, if you've haven't heard of Fiverr it's the largest marketplace for digital services. Companies and individuals come here to buy tasks.
And these tasks are called Gigs. Many Gigs start at $5. But don't let the $5 starting point turn you off. As a seller of a gig you have the ability to set your starting price point.
Plus you can set different package levels for your gigs which have different price points.
When someone buys a gig from you they pay for that gig in advance to Fiverr. Once the order has been successfully delivered you get 80% of the sale. So if have a $10 gig you'll get $8.
Fiverr has many different categories so almost anyone can find something to sell on Fiverr. Here are the different Fiverr categories:
Also with Fiverr you don't need a website, everything is done through your Fiverr account. Many freelancers make very nice full time income on Fiverr.
You can find out more about becoming a seller on Fiverr by clicking here.
Content is the engine that fuels the internet. And if you have a love for writing you can become a freelance content writer and make a very good living doing so.
There are many different types of content people need. People need articles written for their websites, people want EBooks written, people want reviews done, people need technical manuals and reports, it goes on and on.
I've hired writers to create content for my websites. But I'll be honest finding a good writer can be a challenge. So keep that in mind. If you're going to become a content writer make sure you set yourself apart from the crowd.
And you do that by providing top notch content for a reasonable price and delivered on time. Now when it comes to price that really depends on the type of content you're writing and also your skill level. For a 1000 word article I've paid anywhere from $25 to $100 per article.
There are a few ways you can offer your services. First you can have a website and offer your writing services there.
Or you can do what many writers do and the join writing services. The great thing about writing services is that 1000's of people looking to get content done come to those services on a daily basis.
Here are some writing service resources. Each has their own pay scale and set of rules so be sure to read their terms of service.
Social Media Manager
Well what can I say, social media it's a powerhouse for online entrepreneurs if used correctly. But there's a big learning curve when it comes to the proper use of social media and that's why companies and people source out social media managers.
As a social media manager you're not only creating a social media strategy for your clients, your services can also extend to public relations to community growth and outreach just to name a few other services.
One thing about social media is that you can't go to school and learn it, it's a self-taught skill.
And if you’re a social media maven you have a very in demand skill set. So why not make a living doing what you love to do? Some top rated social media managers can earn over 6 figures per year.
If being a social media manager is for you I found this great post that shows the steps to becoming a social media manager.
Pay Per Click (PPC)
Paid advertising is the fastest way to get traffic to any website. But here's the thing - the learning curve for successful PPC advertising can be expensive especially if you're new at it.
And the reason it can get expensive is while going through this learning curve it costs money. Money some people aren’t willing to risk while learning. Even a $5 per day advertising on Facebook that's $150 per month you have to be willing to lose.
So like many other online marketers they turn to people that know how to set up and maintain a successful PPC campaign through platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, AdSense and Bing.
Again just like social media you can't go to school to learn this stuff. It's a self-taught thing. And if you've mastered anyone of these pay per click platforms you have a very in demand skill. And that's a skill you can turn into a full time online income.
Now the cool thing is if you're an expert in PPC you'll have no problem driving traffic to your website to market your skill.
If you like creating videos you can turn that into a full time income.
Many experts say that by 2019 video will claim 80% of all the web traffic. And that means companies want videos because they want to be in front of this trend.
And I know how powerful video is because I use it all the time to drive traffic to my websites, I use it to sell products and I use it to teach. People love videos, so why not give the people what they want.
There are several different types of videos that you can create. You can create talking head videos, and these are videos where you or the client or the on air talent is in front of the camera from the shoulders up talking - hence "talking head video"
You can do production style videos inside a studio or on location. Or you can do screencast videos or PowerPoint videos.
These are the video I make, screencast and PowerPoint. I started on my own and then I received more training from Lon Taylor who is the top rated instructor for these types of videos. He brought my skills to a whole new level.
I love making these videos because they are easy to do and you don't need a ton of equipment. All I use is Camtasia and PowerPoint and then I have my video assets such as animations and graphics.
No matter what type of videos you like creating there is a market for your skill. A great way to get started without even having a website is start selling gigs on Fiverr.
Even though I make a great living online with my next recommended method for being self-employed I like making videos so much I've often thought of selling gigs on Fiverr.
Ok, Here's My #1 Recommendation For Self-Employment Online
Anyone of those ideas I just talked about are fantastic for becoming self-employed. But the truth of the matter is not everyone can be a social media manager or is skilled in PPC or likes to create videos.
So what can you do to become self-employed online?
Well my #1 recommendation to become self-employed is.....
Affiliate marketing is the most successful business model for creating a thriving online business. And I speak from experience. I've been making a full time income online since 2005 as an affiliate marketer.
Ok, if you’re not familiar with affiliate marketing let me quickly explain what it is.
Simply put affiliate marketing is a way of making money online where earn a commission for helping a business by promoting their product or service.
And there’s tens of thousands of companies out there that are BEGGING for people like you come work alongside them.
Companies like Amazon, Walmart, Dell, Toys r Us, Best Buy and the list goes on and on.
If there’s something you’re interested in making money online with, and most people start with a hobby or passion – there’s an affiliate program.
And the reason why affiliate marketing is such a successful business model to follow is because of ALL the benefits:
The best part is you don’t sell anything to make money. All you do is deliver quality information that helps people make a decision. And then direct them to a store like Amazon who handles the rest. That’s it.
And it makes no difference what your online skill level is. Anyone and I mean ANYONE can succeed at affiliate marketing with the proper training and guidance.
If you want to learn exactly how you can become self-employed as an affiliate marketer as well as have access to all the tools and resources you'll need to build your business. Including personal one-on-one support from me then I recommend you check out my review of wealthy affiliate.
